What Does Your School Nurse Do?

Develops and manages Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, severe allergies) based on doctor's orders.

Assesses and treats student illness or injury, deciding whether to provide care for minor issues, manage symptoms to keep the student in class, or send them home for isolation/further care.

Administers medications prescribed by a healthcare provider and authorized by parents.

Manages student vaccination records to ensure compliance with state and school requirements.

Conducts health screenings for vision, hearing, and other potential health concerns.

Works to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases within the school.

Connects families with community health and mental health resources.

Collects and reports necessary school health data to local and state health departments.

Provides immediate first aid for minor injuries like cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
