Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAO)

The “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB) Act requires parents of English Language Learners (ELLs)  participating in Washington’s State Transitional Bilingual Instructional Programs (STBIP) and/or Title III programs to be notified each year of Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAO) for the school district.

Title I and Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Act include English Language Learners in the state accountability system and require states to set performance targets referred to as Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAOs) for English language proficiency.  AMAOs for English language proficiency must include:

AMAO-1: Annual increases in the number or percentage of children making progress in learning English.

AMAO-2: Annual increases in the number or percentage of children attaining English proficiency.

AMAO-3: The number or percentage of ELL students meeting AYP targets in reading and math ELL cells on the state assessments.
