The purpose of this page is to identify and clarify some common problematic situations that occur in our school. We hope that by bringing extra attention to these scenarios that we can help students avoid some of the pitfalls associated with them.
Respect - Following a reasonable staff request
We have noticed an increase in the number of incidents involving students to follow a reasonable staff request. These requests include: please sit down, stop talking, go to the office, go to lunch detention, please pick up that garbage in your area and many other variants. Refusing to follow a reasonable staff request is not acceptable and can lead to unsafe and disruptive situations. Students who refuse a reasonable staff request may be suspended out of school.
Lockers (Both Hall and Gym)
All to often students either share their locker combination with others or choose to not lock items in their locker in an effort to save time. Invariably this results in items being stolen and never recovered. Lockers (both hall and gym) are provided for every student that needs one and we ask that they be used and combinations kept secret. Best friends change frequently at the middle school and we are not able to change combinations as frequently as groups of friends change.
Cell Phones and media players
One of the most common excuses that we get for students caught with a cell phone out is that "My parent was calling or texting me." Even if this were true it is a violation of our policy and will still result in the confiscation of the phone for parent retrieval. Parents needing to contact their child should do so by calling the office. If you need to speak to them urgently we will get them out of class if needed. Other frequent excuses include: "I was just turning it off.", "I was looking at what time it was.", "It just turned itself on and went off.". We encourage everyone to review our cell phone and electronic device policy included in every student's agenda.
Whistling
Whistling has become a very disruptive behavior lately here at RMS. We have made several announcements and ask that students not whistle inside the building.
"Pantsing" and other Similarly Related Inappropriate Behavior
The act of "pantsing" others and twisting, tapping, and hitting the private areas of others has come up several times. These are serious offenses and can be considered sexaul harassment. As such these offenses will result in an out-of-school suspension. Students are requested to not engage in these types of inappropriate behaviors and to report any violations. We want our school to be a safe and secure place for everyone.
