Program Description

Maple Lane High School is an accredited high school affiliated with the Rochester School District. We are home to approximately 220 young men ages 14-21 who have been adjudicated by the juvenile courts of the state of Washington. Courses of study include grades nine through twelve with achievement level programming down to the elementary skill levels. The school year runs 180 days with an additional 40 day extended school program. Class sizes range from one to fifteen with an average student-teacher ratio of 10:1.

An outgrowth of the 1978 and 1995 change in juvenile sentencing laws has produced a rapidly changing student population. Because of the constant turnover of students, classes are presented on an individualized basis.

Maple Lane High School has concentrated on meeting the Rochester School District recommended requirements for high school graduation and offers elective and prevocational classes. Special efforts are made to upgrade student deficiencies. Remedial classes in basic skills are provided through Title I funding to meeting needs of the students who have low skill levels in the areas of language arts, reading, and math.

All students at the sophomore academic level are scheduled to take the WASL tests, aligning with district and state requirements.

Programming for special needs students is delivered through an individualized format (Individual Education Program). A work experience program that includes training, career orientation, job tryout, a mock application/hiring procedure and a job search segment is available to students. Maple Lane High School administers the GED. For some of our students this is an option we offer to students that do not have enough time at Maple Lane High School to complete their high school graduation requirements before parole.

Maple Lane High School also provides the educational program for five locked down living units. (1) The Columbia Living Unit has an inpatient drug rehabilitation treatment program also providing aftercare services. (2) The Laurel and (3) Birch Living Units have specific treatment programs for students with mental health issues. The Intensive Management Unit (IMU) Living Unit, consisting of the (4) Baker and (5) Chelan Living Units, is a 64 bed facility with 32 beds dedicated to new students to Maple Lane campus and 32 beds for students that need a reorientation to the Maple Lane Program.

Maple Lane High School places a strong emphasis on establishing a positive learning atmosphere that formulates a program that builds a student’s confidence, academic success and a positive self-image.
