H.E.A.R.T. High
School (Holistic Educational Alternatives for Rochester Teens) has
served youth of Rochester who
wish to pursue their high school diploma in an alternative setting
since 1997. Classes are small (no more than
twelve students) to enable immediate one-on-one assistance. Students
work independently on computerized curriculum materials, and are encouraged
to accept responsibility for their own education. Classes are self-paced
with at least 80 percent mastery required of each student in each
subject. Work-study courses are also available for credit.
The staff at H.E.A.R.T.
High School work hard to provide an atmosphere that encourages students
to grow in self-esteem and social responsibility and to develop a
positive, caring attitude toward lifelong academic, social, and personal
goals. Mr. Watson is H.E.A.R.T.'s Teacher. He brings twenty plus years
of teaching experience to his students, and a dedication to alternative
opportunities for students. Ms. Munsell is H.E.A.R.T.'s Educational
Assistant. She has fifteen plus years of experience in the Rochester School
District and creates a positive and encouraging atmosphere for H.E.A.R.T.
students.
Students attend
three hours of class time, either from 8:00 - 11:00 AM or 12:00 -
3:00 PM. Monday through Thursday. All absent
time must be made up. Friday is an optional day. Each student must
document thirteen hours of outside school work on a time log each
week. It takes 22 credits to graduate from H.E.A.R.T. High School.
The school provides a full range of academic subjects that enable
a student to complete the State of Washington's requirement for a
basic high school diploma. All classes are
designed to help students master the components of the Washington
State Essential Academic Learning Requirements.
